Treatments For Kids Cold Sores

Cold sores from HSV-1 usually go away on their own within 5 to 7 days. Although no medications can make the infection go away, some treatments are available that can shorten the length of the outbreak and make the cold sores less painful.

  • If the cold sores are making a kid sick, a doctor may prescribe a special medicine that fights the herpes simplex virus.

  • If you get a cold sore, try holding some ice wrapped in cloth on the sore.

  • Cool foods and drinks can help relieve discomfort.

  • It is possible to do blood tests and viral cultures on cold sores, but they are usually diagnosed on the typical appearance of the cold sore. It is sometimes easy to confuse a cold sore with impetigo though, especially if they are in the crusty phase and your child doesn't often get cold sores.

  • For most kids, the sores go away on their own without any special treatment from a doctor.
